In 2010, I discovered I had a brother. My mother had him as an unmarried woman in 1940s Ireland. Unable to face the tragedy of her son's life, she died shortly after he finally tracked her down. A journey through the convent gates of the home where my brother was born, to the fields where the mothers toiled, down the driveway where cars left regularly with American women holding children they did not know to the cemetery with no gravestones, the darkness beneath my feet.
